Rock music was introduced in the mid-1950's. During this era, rock became the most popular form of music and it's popularity spread worldwide. The catchy sound of electric guitars, drums, and exciting dance beats thrilled the young and old population. The new and interesting sound of rock music became a national phenomenon. People just couldn't get enough of the rock music sound.

The catchiest part of rock music is the sound of the electric guitar. Guitar artist Chuck Berry created a sound that paved the way for future artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana. These guitarists unique styles and sounds awed crowds of rock fans. Jam sessions, garage bands, and air guitarists were made popular by rock music and the guitar sound.

Rock music evolved over time, bringing new sounds with each new decade. The 60's brought you the British Invasion, which lead to folk rock and psychedelic rock. Even though, both had totally different sounds and feels, these genres were very popular during this time period. From The Beatles to Bob Dylan to The Doors, all of these artist sang about love, drugs, and war. This music touched everyone of the 60's and opened the door to more rock sounds.

Soon to follow, Led Zeppelin introduced a heavier, darker sound in the 1970's. This started the sound of hard rock. More instrument sounds were introduced and created more unique sounds. Fans were falling more and more in love with the rock bands of the 70's. Live performances became popular and bands performed live in stadiums and arenas around the world. Some of the more popular rock bands during this period were Journey, Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, and Boston. We can still hear music from these groups on the radio today.

The 1980's introduced many subgenres of rock music such as punk rock, college rock, indie rock, and modern rock. One popular form of rock music during the 80's was known as heartland rock. Artist such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Segar, and John Cougar Mellencamp fit into the category. Glam rock was also introduced during this era. This is where the "hair bands" were introduced. Sounds from Poison, Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, and Bon Jovi made it big. Most of these bands continued their sound on into the 1990's and on.

No matter what your favorite rock era is, rock music influences and shaped many of the sounds that you hear today. Whether you turn on the radio, hear a commercial on the television, rock music is everywhere. Rock music has a very interesting past and it will keep evolving in the future. We can only imagine what rock music will bring us in the future.
